SPA  EXPERIENCES

Coming from a millenial generation, spa is usually a treat for myself only during holiday. It is not something that I go to on a regular basis considering the prices, lack of exposure and busy schedule. When I am on vacation, that is when I have all the time in the world to rejuvenate and book for a spa treatment. On top of that, cost plays an important role for me. Typically, I would travel to Thailand or Indonesia which is well known for their signature Thai Massages as well as the affordable treatment prices they offer as compared to the spas in Singapore.

One significant spa that I have been to, which left a long-lasting memory would have to be the Reborn Massage & Reflexology in Batam. I was there recently and stumbled upon this spa while heading back to my hotel and was intrigued by their huge branding and luxurious looking waiting area.

Although I arrived near to their closing time, the receptionist was very polite and still answer my queries with patience. For the good service they rendered, with no doubt I instantly made an appointment for a full body massage the next day. Contrasting to Kenko Spa Marina Square interior, I honestly feel that Reborn gives off the luxurious impression the moment I step in even though Reborn prices are fairly reasonable and affordable. I am aware that Kenko as a spa is adapting to Japanese and Chinese concept but I did not receive the same vibes as it looks rather dull and not as interesting.

RECEPTION COUNTER

On top of that, I also noticed the differences between the reception counter of the two spas. Kenko reception are much smaller and at times it will be so cluttered with paperwork such as the Appointment Sheet, the menus, Guest Registration List and many more. It makes the reception table unappealing to the guest especially when they walk in to have a look at the menu or to make their payment at the counter. Messy working space will give of a bad impression on the staff as well as the establishment itself as it shows low professionalism towards the receptionist and the spa itself and may deter potential or existing customers from coming again. Besides that, the counter is an open concept which means anyone can have access to the computer as well as the cash drawer and may cause issue such as theft.

TREATMENTS

Since I was entitled to a complimentary 60 minutes body massage by Kenko, it made me so eager to have a taste of how an expensive treatment feels like. Well, a $120 treatment is considered expensive to me considering the prices I paid for at the other spas I have visited. I had my first body massage at Reborn and it set such a high expectation for me ever since. However, I was quite disappointed after undergoing Kenko body massage. The therapist at Reborn were more approachable, friendly and are more willing to have small talk during the treatment while the therapist I had at Kenko are more conservative and barely had any communications. Besides that, at Reborn, while the therapist is doing the treatment, she will inform me areas that I need to improve on. For example, my blood circulation is quite poor therefore recommending me foods that I should avoid and consume more. Furthermore, Reborn Body Massage compromise of foot wash and massage prior to starting the body treatment which was lovely. However, the therapist at Kenko did not even touch my feet which was astonishing to me as I thought it is part of the body massage. Lastly, Reborn offer me a set of fresh warm towel to wipe off the oils and a disposable slipper so that my shoes will not be soaked in oil afterwards. In Kenko however, it did not end on a good note as the therapist just gave me a tap on the shoulder and left the room afterwards, left me hanging without any instructions.

In conclusion, I feel that I experienced better service and treatments in Reborn even though they offer a fraction of the price as compared to Kenko.

Components contributing to wellness economy

1. Workplace Wellness
There are many benefits that wellness brings to a workplace. With the current mental issues around, where many get stressed over work, workplace wellness may offer a temporary escape for them to let loose and have fun. Encouraging employees to exercise and providing healthy meal options will improve productivity as they will feel more energized and motivated to complete the work. When employees are healthy, the organisation are able to spend lesser on healthcare and decrease in staff turnover as they are motivated and productive. Therefore, workplace wellness is a win-win situation for both organisation as well as the wellness economy.

2. Healthy Eating, Nutrition & Weight Loss
With more readily available healthier options products to cater to the change in consumer diet such as veganism, healthy living has been an uprising growth in the industry. More people are keen to adopt a healthier lifestyle and be more pro-active in order for them to combat with diseases and take early precautions. Therefore, with more people moving towards eating clean and adopting a better lifestyle so that they can remain healthy, the demand in wellness economy will hence increase. More healthier choice food is to be produce to cater to this growing industry.

Develop a successful operation framework of a spa & wellness establishment
For guest to have an overall smooth experience, the layout of the spa plays an important role especially for the reception area as they are the first point of contact for guest. Having a well-lit yet soothing lighting entrance with a pleasant spa aroma accompanied by a welcoming receptionist will prepare the guest to the start of wellness and relaxation. Besides that, a spa operation should match the concept that they are portraying. For example, Spa By Norfasarie is a Mother Daughter spa that permits entry to female clients only. Therefore, their spa menu incorporates treatments that are suitable and favourable to the female populations as well as the kids' packages.

Many a times, I also noticed that a spa waiting area and relaxation area are within the same perimeter. As such, it may cause a traffic issue particularly when the waiting area is not huge enough to hold everyone there. This might even cause an unpleasant pre and post treatment experience due to the insufficient space to relax. Therefore, I feel that these two areas should be separated. Waiting area should be near the treatment rooms so that they can proceed to the rooms immediately once the therapist is available. Waiting area should have a dim lighting and soothing element to prepare the guest for their treatment whereas relaxation area should be serene with a daylight view to prepare guest to go back to reality.

One spa & wellness trend that will impact the change in lifestyle trends on spa & wellness industry in Singapore

WORKPLACE WELLNESS
An article by Business Insider mentioned that “72 per cent of employers in Singapore said they considered stress and mental health an issue affecting productivity. However, only 51 per cent have emotional and psychological wellness programmes in place for their workers.” This shows that workplace wellness needs to be fully implemented in every organisation to combat the increase in current workplace stress in Singapore.

Ultimately, employers should try to incorporate health issues in the day-to-day conversation as it shows that subordinates well-being is a concern towards the company. Another example is by having a daily/weekly/monthly exercise routine where employees are encouraged to run, take-the-stairs-week, yoga class in the workplace premises as part of the workplace wellness programme. When workplace wellness are practiced in an organisation, employees will produce greater productivity and increase in morale. When employees are healthy, it will boost their self-esteem, stress level will decrease, lower absenteeism rate thus cost of healthcare can also be reduced. If the wellness programmes are conducted regularly, it will develop a habit to the employees by continuing the healthy lifestyle and seek for better wellness programmes outside of their workplace.

Overall, my spa journey has been a fruitful one as I managed to experience ‘working’ in the spa industry for a short 10hours and learning more about the background of this industry. Besides that, I find it interesting as I was given the opportunity to be a staff as well as a guest to receive my complimentary treatment and the ability to witness two perspectives of the spa I was attached to.
